Racing is hard, so why does it become a passion, a lifestyle, a culture for some of us?

Fitness has many physical and mental benefits, but it requires constant effort. After meeting the daily obligations for family welfare, most people choose indulgences of various sorts rather than pursuing fitness. Some of us choose fitness as our top priority outside of our “work” and “family” lives, and we experience the benefits. It becomes natural for a few to push the fitness training to the limits of physical and mental capabilities to maximize the benefits, and it is possible to push too far to one’s detriment. Finding the balance that maximizes performance and enjoyment is an ongoing challenge.

Human instinct drives competitive behaviors. Throughout our evolution, this has led to personal / tribal reward and propagation of the characteristics of those most fit for their environment (survival of the fittest). Even the less successful competitors serve as fodder in the development of the more successful competitors.

Successful completion of a competitive event is rewarding on many levels. The definition of success ranges from winning to finishing to keeping up for a while. Improving upon a previous finish or achieving a comparable result is the best most of us can hope for, and it is a tremendous accomplishment, the culmination of training program, health, skill, concentration, planning, work-life balance, support from family and the racing community.

Racing provides the best feedback of performance level / progress. Another challenge is to understand this feedback. What does it say about strengths and weaknesses? Am I less / more fit; Is my bike position / posture better / worse; Is my pedaling efficiency above / below average; Are my bike handling skills better / worse? Am I riding features that competitors are walking, or vice versa? A team director, coach and teammates can help turn race performance feedback into specific actions that will provide the biggest performance improvements.

Camaraderie develops with all competitors, race officials, promoters, volunteers when one becomes a regular participant, as all share a common top priority and recognize they are among the few humans who are capable of the competition, “the athletic 1%”.

Some team and club members do not compete regularly, but they achieve their competitive / comparative goals by participating on training rides with regular competitors. Such training ride participation also serves the competitors and teams by growing the racing community, spreading camaraderie and increasing sponsor reach.

Racing on a team raises the camaraderie to a higher level by enabling contribution to team success and celebration of successes of teammates. At Team we use aggressive teamwork and communication as the foundation for building our athletes, program and critical relationships with our sponsors. The goal of Team is to fully develop the team concept so that our riders are better prepared to accomplish their goals and have the ability to provide the community of cycling with the best representation possible.

Team has been operating since 2007 with the help and support of Bob’s Bicycles and many others. In addition to the Boise region, Team is also very active across the northwest race scene and continues to have a strong influence on the final results. We take pride in Team efforts and accomplishments, and we value the family that has welcomed us.
